Beauty as a Symbol of Natural Systematicity

چکیده
In this essay I examine Kant’s claim that a relation of symbolization links judgements of beauty and judgements of ‘ systematicity ’ in nature (that is, judgements concerning the ordering of natural forms under hierarchies of laws). My aim is to show that the symbolic relation between the two is, for Kant, much closer than many commentators think: it is not only the form but also the objects of some of our judgements of taste that symbolize the systematicity of nature.

متن کاملThe Influence of the Philosophy of Natural Beauty on Environmental Ethics with an Emphasis on the Educational Value of Nature Documentary Film
Environmental aesthetics includes some features of natural and artificial beauty which, apart from its importance as one of subfields of philosophy, can play a role in reforming and upgrading of human relation with nature and thus this can have constructive influences on environmental ethics. This is one of the possibilities of philosophy, and also this is a way to show more attention to the va...
متن کاملConstituent Similarity and Systematicity: the Limits of Rst-order Connectionism
Standard feedforward and recurrent networks cannot support strong systematicity when constituents are presented as local input/output vectors (Phillips, 1998). To explain systematicity connectionists must either: (1) develop alternative models; or (2) justify the assumption of similar (non-local) constituent representations prior to the learning task. I show that the second commonly presumed op...

This claim entails that connectionism cannot compete with the classical approach as an alternative architectural framework for hu...
متن کاملSystematicity and Natural Language Syntax1
A lengthy debate in the philosophy of the cognitive sciences has turned on whether the phenomenon known as ‘systematicity’ of language and thought shows that connectionist explanatory aspirations are misguided. We investigate the issue of just which phenomenon ‘systematicity’ is supposed to be. The much-rehearsed examples always suggest that being systematic has something to do with ways in whi...
